The Android operating system began to be developed in 2003. Andy Rubin and Rich Miner were the founders of Android OS. They said "More smart mobile devices that know the preferences and location of users." when began.
The first devices thought to be used were cameras. But, since the camera market is not so large, they have moved to the smartphone market. And android became an opponent to operating systems such as Symbian and Windows Mobile.
Google bought Android in 2005!
The operating system has continued to be developed by Google, including Rubin and Miner. In 2008, the first smartphone to use the Android operating system was put on the market by HTC.
Open Handset Alliance (OHA) was established in 2007. OHA helped to developing process of Android operating system. It contains the brands like HTC, Sony, Qualcomm and Google. Looking at the technology, there is the Linux kernel at the base.
The Linux kernel contains drivers that allow applications such as camera, touch screen, usb to communicate with applications.
Furthermore critical processes such as power management it is done by the kernel.
The upper level of the Linux kernel is the Java virtual machine. The Java language is selected for applications to be independent from platform.
Dalvik has been used as a Java virtual machine up to Android 5.0.
With Android 5.0, ART (Android Run Time) virtual machine has established. The Java virtual machine makes applications written in a bytecode executable.
It's a kind of interpreter!
Applications comes after the Java virtual machine.
Applications are generally written in Java language and there are many applications that vary according to the users need. Apart from Java language, applications can be written in C / C ++ language using Google's native development kit (NDK).
Applications can be also developed with C # using Microsoft's Xamarin platform.
Android's mobile operating system has the biggest share in the market because of there are a lot of applications.
There is two extra reason to be the market leader such as Open source and Open Handset Alliance.
Android apps are available to users on the Google Play Store. There are over 2 million apps in the Play Store as of February 2016. In the Play Store, multimedia products like books and movies are also offered to users.
Except smartphones, OS is also used on smart devices like tablets and cameras.
According to information provided by Google, there were 1.6 billion Android devices in 2015, and this number continues to grow day by day. 85% of smart devices use Android.
It is a fact that the Android is leader at the mobile operating system market.
